Sarah Cowles is a landscape designer based in Tblisi, Georgia and Columbus, Ohio. She is the founder of Ruderal Academy, curator of the Bureau of Open Culture, and Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Ohio State University. As a first-time resident in May 2008, she worked on Beta Laydown: Improvisation in Reclamation, a conceptual project on the potash mining in Wendover. She has since returned to Wendover a number of times to work on various projects, including a series of drawings about the slow motion explosion of the “Stepptoe Complex.”
