The Carefree Industrial Park is one of four underground commercial complexes near the town of Independence, Missouri, east of Kansas City. Carefree is in an industrial area south of the Missouri River, next to the Central Plains Cement Company, which operates a large and active plant in and amidst the former underground limestone mining network. Carefree’s mines cover more than seven million square feet, but not all of it has been developed. It has several underground entrances accessed from a central pad, where trucks can park and wait. Inside space is leased mostly to warehousing and distribution companies, including third party logistics companies like Midwest Material Management, Centerpoint, and FW Warehousing. The site was first developed as Innerspace Storage, in 1975.
