Receiving Station S, in Van Nuys, was energized in 1963, the 13th Receiving Station built by DWP. It serves the central San Fernando Valley, and relieves capacity for Receiving Station E, on the east end of the Valley. It distributes locally through Distributing Station 21, located on site, and a few other Distributing Stations. Upstream, it is connected only to Receiving Station E, and gets its power through a 230,000 volt underground aluminum cable, which travels mostly under Oxnard Street, a record for the highest voltage cable of this type when it was installed in 1969.
