San Francisquito Power Plant #2 was built in 1926, along the Aqueduct, few miles further downstream from Power Plant #1. It was located a mile from the base of the San Francisquito Dam, which failed catastrophically in 1928. The plant was destroyed, but was rebuilt. The dam was not rebuilt.
The San Francisquito Dam failure was one of the worst industrial accidents in American history. More than 450 people were killed when the sudden rush of water flowed through the canyon, and through the Santa Clara River Valley to the ocean at Ventura, 50 miles away. Rubble from the dam remains on site.
