Several buildings used for the final assembly of the first nuclear bomb prototypes were located in this tech area at Southbase. The buildings had unique components that were critical to the continued fabrication of nuclear bombs at the time. After the war the structures and their contents were shipped to Kirtland Air Force base, in Albuquerque, where nuclear bomb development continued, and continues, to this day. Some of the buildings’ footprints and a large concrete block, used as a work table for the bombs, which weigh as much as 10,000 pounds, remain onsite here.
