The remains of a rocket test site, including an observation bunker and the concrete base of slanted launch ramp, remained for years following the World War II-era testing of JB-2 rockets, which were similar to the German V-1 that were used in attacks on Britain. The rockets here used pulse jet engines, and had little wings that enabled them to fly very quickly, often landing many miles away in the bombing range. There is one JB-2 rocket, called Wendover Willie, on display at the Hill Aerospace Museum. Some say this program, which began in late 1944, may have served as cover for the more secret Manhattan Project tests occurring at Southbase at the time.
