This tower was built by the Walt Disney Company for the movie Con Air, which used Southbase extensively as a filming location in 1996. In the film narrative, Southbase was a fictional place near Fresno, California, called Lerner Field. Upon arriving here for the first time, the actor John Malkovich, playing a malevolent escaped convict, descends the ramp from a plane and says, “so glad to be here.” Much of the set was destroyed through the course of the film, including part of the tower, which had a Corvette, dangling by a chain behind an airborne airplane, dragged through it.
