Two remote pads were used for the assembly of the prototype Fat Man bomb’s high explosives components. Located on the edge of Southbase, they were safely distant from the rest of the munitions area. There were small sheds here, with copper floors, to reduce the risk of generating an electrical spark. This site also has a crater, made by an ordnance disposal team disposing of weapons long after the war. The crater was partially filled in by crews shooting the 2003 film The Hulk, which used Southbase as a filming location, as well as other parts of the base.
