In the 1980s a defense contractor set up a facility in a remote part of the airfield to test the effects of lightning on critical components of intercontinental ballistic missiles. A net of wire is connected to a number of poles topped with lightning rods, and concentrated around a rocket nose cone in the middle of the site. It has been abandoned since the test ended.
