Southbase has long been used as a small arms training and target range, and continues to be today, used by police, military, and recreational shooting clubs, including for long-range rifles. This type of shooting uses tables set up as much as 1,000 yards away, shooting at targets that are raised and lowered from behind a long berm, marked with large numbers on the berm. Bullets fly across the road, making access to Southbase hazardous at that time.
