A new passenger terminal was built in the 2000s to accommodate an influx of passengers coming to Wendover on “casino junkets.” The local casinos hired a company to manage a charter service, bringing around 50,000 people a year to Wendover, from around 70 cities, mostly in the middle part of the country, for brief and inexpensive stays at the casinos (which are primarily owned by the Peppermill Corporation). This helps the casinos get through the midweek lag of customers, who otherwise are mostly weekend visitors from Salt Lake City, and helps the airport receive federal funding for a higher volume of passenger aircraft.
